Self Evaluation of Micro-Teaching

This lesson went fairly well, although there were some parts that may have gone differently in a real classroom. My learning model was Analysing Text. I followed the guidelines well. I developed questions following the structure set out in the textbook. If someone had listened in on my lesson while reading the text book it would have been fairly obvious how I had developed the lesson.

Something I would like to work on more is wait time. With our class there were times where none of the “students” spoke. When this happened I became uncomfortable and prompted the students and in some cases gave away answers too easily. With our class, the silence was most likely due to the early time of the lesson. In high school this will not be the only factor for student’s quietness. I’ve heard of the benefits of wait time, but I have never really utilized it in the field or in practice. This is something I would need to work on.

Also, the text said that the lesson should have a lot of give and take from all students and teachers. If someone walked in on the lesson it should be difficult to find the teacher amongst the students. The teacher should not stand at the front of the room prodding students for answers. This is how the lesson may have to start to get the students used to the process, but after a while the students should be developing their own questions as well as answering each others. While micro teaching I felt the need to produce a certain persona which was more authoritarian and structural than the method may have needed.
In the future I will need to develop this method more. I will need to learn a sense of self control. I cannot be the only one to produce questions and answers. The students must contribute to the give and take of the process. There are many students who have something to say but are too intimidated. I feel that this is a good method to encourage those students to speak their mind, developing their minds and social skills.
